2012 y'all, we're all on borrowed time just waiting for the Aliens to come. It's been a minute since the last update, been busy and by busy I mean Lazy. Have a lot going on these days and finding a few minutes/ mental compacity to put together some meaningful words can be tough. Whatever the case I plan on rzarecting this here blog like the Rza from the Gravediggaz era. Lots of fun stuff in the near future, first and foremost this Saturday we begin "The Movement" with Rich Medina. This is the official new monthly 1st Saturday jump for Lazy Afternoon. De La Soul and Fela are two of my favorite music artists. The relationship between hip hop and Fela's Afrobeat mixes well like peas and carrots covered in melted butter. Met this kid Amerigo in Nashville a few months back when I was in town for the Boom Bap party. He was low key and humble, we had beers and I spent the weekend listening to his beat tape in the car. Dude even bought a make shift dj setup to this warehouse we we're staying in so we could listen to our record finds from digs around town, nice gesture if I do say so myself. Anyways unbeknownst to me he operates under the alias Gummy Soul and just dropped the cleverly titled project "Fe La Soul" which combines one of my favorite rap groups with the legendary music of Fela Kuti. 1985 Jackson MS, Billy "Soul" Bonds layed down "Deep Inside My Soul". Found this Lp in the local antique mall and took a chance because you never know. Side A was speaking to me, was going to rip the vinyl but holler'd at DJ Google instead. Low and behold some other weirdo already had it up. "Because of You" and "Punkathon Affair" are bangers in my book, Billy drops knowledge over some 80s slaps and synths. "Love Injection" warns of the dangers of VD, 1985 must have been a good year for the dude.

The Boom Bap Nashville

Nashville Tennessee home to BBQ, hot chicken, Cicadas, formerly Eddie Meeks and a monthly party called the BOOM BAP. Moonlighting as a D.J. I arrived in Nashville with an empty record bag and an empty stomach. My dude Case Bloom came through and the digging/ eating tour commenced. The city was being held hostage by these bugs called Cicadas that make an appearance for 6 weeks every 13 years or so. They where everywhere but couldn't phase us and our mission for records and food, walk with me.

First stop was the Tucker and Bloom headquarters a spot where bags are hand made. I don't endorse much but I can tell you these bags are quality and come with a life long warranty. Had a new strap thrown on mine while I was there check the flavor: Tucker & Bloom.com

Of-course the first meal had to be soul food, ribs and a fried pork chop #softbody

Don't drink the Kool Aid.

Case got hot sauce on his shirt so he bought a new one while out looking for collectable vinyl.

We stopped by Jack White's immaculate record store. This place was had some intricate decor to say the least. They sell and distribute a series of 45s that they record on site and press in limited runs.

They also have a record truck, you know so they can go around pedaling wax.

Drank some seltzer water and spent the evening in a smokey bar where djs played funk 45s.

Ran into George Summers from Raw Shack records.

Turns out we have a lot of mutual acquaintances. "Hey you know Calvin at Park Ave records & Cds? Tell him George says Hello"

Spent the following day beat fishing and eating again. Found this early 90s rap gem sealed in the dollar section. I'll post a rip of it soon, it's raw.

Stepped on some Cicadas on the way to Boom Bap resident Bowl's spot. Listened to finds and geeked out on his collection. Case pulled this Sergio Mendes LP, notable as sampled by former Nashville resident Count Bass D for in the loop.

Always been a fan of Count, here's the Sergio song looped up:

This was an afternoon that would live in infamy as I tried "Hot Chicken" a Nashville specialty. This spicy fried chicken came from this spot 400 degreez. I opted for the 200 degrees on a 400 degree scale and can honestly say this had my insides tingling for hours. This may have been the hottest thing I ever put in my mouth (AYO) Hot Chicken is not a game, guard your grill.

Saturday we had breakfast at Mas tacos por favor courtesy of Boom Bap resident DJ Rate. This was hands down my favorite meal in Nashville.

Case and I shared some "Hot Soup" a def pause worthy moment in life.

We contemplated having a Crunk fish sandwich for dessert but couldn't hang so we just took this pic instead.

That night was the Boom Bap, this party was way too much F U N. Case Bloom, DJ Rate, and Bowls host this monthly and Nashville doesn't front, salute to the fellas for keeping it moving. Four turntables and 5 DJs rocking back back to back till 3 am, we really took it there.

Good to see Bowls carry (crates) on tradition.

Had a special un-announced guest swing through; former Tennessee Titan and Heisman trophy winner Eddie George. Normally celebrity DJs get the dillsnick also known as no love in this camp. Eddie is defiantly the exception, he really showed and proved rocking doubles of Kool G Rap like it was going out of style. A Philly native Eddie was no slouch behind the tables and scratched under the surface banging some obscure 90s rap gems. Really didn't expect him to bring it like he did.

Lazy Afternoon is starting this Sunday. What started as a concept inspired (see sharked) from the legendary Do-Over party and a brainstorming session has turned into big F-U-N @ Eye Spy here in Orlando. In addition to the usual cast of characters we have 5 X Dmc Champ Craze coming to play. Former James Brown drummer and Stones Throw artist Tony Cook will be hosting the party with Peter Baldwin (remember this name). There will hopefully be a surprise or two throughout the day, this is not to be missed. Salute to Cooterman and Spreadcheeks I mean Spreadsheets for turning this pipe dream into a reality and making this a FREE event. Not even sure if Orlando's ready for all this. Don't Sleep, like for reals get your ass outta bed cause the parties from 2-9pm:

Well not my uncle but the thread title caught my attention. I've been stuck on the couch under the weather lurking the interwebs like a pro. Stumbled across this thread on every record aficionado's favorite message board. Someone's uncle had some unreleased disco to share with you tube, some good stuff here. In the nephews own words:

"My uncle Fritz Dejean is a musician, working in the industry since the 70s. He's a multi-instrumentalist playing sax, percussion, piano, etc. and has played with a lot of different soul/jazz/rock artists. In the late 70s/early 80s he was a member of Mandrill (he's on their album "Energized" from '82). Besides working for others, he also does his own music.

BMF has been flipping stacks at Phat N Jazzy every Tuesday night for 15+ years. In a transit city nights come and go like the weather. The current nightlife demographic was just learning how to walk when Phat N Jazzy opened it's doors years ago. Often intimated there's simply no other party in Florida with high quality tunes on a weekly basis. It's hard enough maintaining a weekly night especially on a Tuesday when most folks are home watching re runs of Basketball wives or some shit. What makes P & J even more sacred is the night does not cater to the fast food played put cliche (insert other negative descriptions here) steez. Unfortunately the Phat N Jazzy is on a temporary hiatus but BMF will resume the re-vamped weekly Feb 15th. The rumor is they P & J will have free admission and free drinks. The Paradise Garage is a mythological New York City disco that help usher in house music during the 70s and early 80s. The Paradise Garage was labeled an oasis. A place where you could walk in and "be free" to the sounds of Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, and Frankie Knuckles. D.J. culture was birthed and people came to party all night to upbeat dance music.

ART BASEL 2010

Art Basel is my favorite time to visit Miami hands down. Everything worth checking seemed to be off South Beach and in the hood aka the design district. In addition to galleries opening their doors there's colorful murals throughout the city. Captured some inspiration with my Iphone 4, the greatest invention of mankind. Click on the pics to enlarge:

Went to this True Hip Hop Photography exhibit by Mike Schreiber. I took this photo of a photo of Slick Rick eating a sandwich and guzzled as many free Heineken's as physically possible.
From there caught up with North Carolina artists Matthew Curran and Dubelyoo. Dubelyoo had some work at this Scion show and Kool Herc was playing records. Good to see corporate funds allocated properly.
The event was at one of those ice bar style freezers. We got free drink tickets; I decided to eat mine. Doobelyoo scoffed at the ice cups provided as he had bought his own gauntlet from home.

Warming up the room for Kool Herc, she held it down.
We bounced back to the design district and I ate a plate of delicious grilled meat (ayo).

I managed to get a slot playing at this "Please Stand By" party (thanks Fienbrezzy). The Heineken guzzling caught up with me and I spent to much time waiting in line for the bathroom... Peanut Butter Wolf killed a video set for an intimate crowd into the AM. Hoped on the tables and shut it down, literally around 5 am. Good to see a lot of similar faces that night. Big ups to Kems (aka DJ nap it off), Iron Ora, Lumin, 5150, Rodney and everyone else I bumped into.

Slept in late Sunday to Do it over again. Stopped by the Primary Flight gallery to dap Shepherd Fairy. The Do over was big fun, despite a little rain all the DJs kept it moving. Don't remember the last time I heard so many top notch selections in one day. After the Do we went an caught Questlove play a set was weird hearing him drop Lynard Skynard the crowd ate it up.

New music from the Rose city you know home to Cool Nutz, Blackberries, pasty white hippies, the Blazers, Salmon and the finest greenery in the world. I have so many found memories growing up in North East Portland and by that I mean Beaverton. Beaverton is the stepford wives suburb of Portland and home to the Nike World headquarters, shout out to Sam for the steady employee store hook up. When Portland implemented the light rail system we went all city duke! Was just reminiscing yesterday about being a young boy hitting the Poh Hop and other shows at the Roseland. I met Nerstylist while drunk waiting in a line down in Miami during WMC, we exchanged info, he "facebooked" me and many months later hit me off with this classy mix. As I DJ I'm always sorting mixes into two categories; the a) "I want a gig" mixes filled with fast food music and b) "I Love Music" this is stuff I'm into hope you dig it too. This mix falls into the latter, in his own words:

"The title "Beautiful Sounds" is pretty self explanatory. Basically, I wanted to take all things that sound beautiful, blend these things together, package it, then share it with all of you. When I think of the phrase "Beautiful Sounds", I hear congas, horns, bass lines, jazz chords, latin rhythms, and sultry voices singing in languages I can't understand. If someone asked me what genres "Beautiful Sounds" would be comprised of, I'd mention jazz, afrobeat, bossanova, samba, salsa, soul, funk, and anything else you don't hear on your local radio station.

I'm quite satisfied with the way that this turned out, despite all the nit-picking I could still do with it. In retrospect, I never thought that my 10+ years of deejaying would amount to me putting out a mix such as this one. Early on in my DJ career, I always thought I would remain a hip-hop battle DJ practicing to be the next Q-bert (just like everyone else in the 90's). I'm nowhere close to competing for a DMC championship, but I'm content that my style has evolved to what it is now.

My heart and soul will always yearn for beautiful music, and as a DJ that's what I'll continue to provide..."

Last week was an eye opening experience as i spent to much time in South beach for the Zombie fest known as winter music conference. A place where grown men have their nipples "done" and paying $23 for a vodka redbull is a harsh reality. The upside to W.M.C. is the celebrated dj nerd culture. One day I found myself sipping a cold Red Stripe at the Standard hotel record show. As I'm Raiding the crates with a heavy dough ball burning in my pocket, I notice an older bearded man with long hair gripping a giant stack of early electro 12 inches. He looked familiar but couldn't place em. I ask if he's gonna buy the whole table, he tells me he doesn't collect records or dj anymore but he absolutely has to buy these because he produced em. His buddy walks up and barks "Hey Arthur, you can get all this shit for .50 cents on ebay, let's get outta here...":

Now available for free download is Grey Matter's micro-album entitled "Breathe". Most artists release singles but Illustrate and TEMPERMENTAL didn't feel satisfied with giving you just one song. A single track didn't fully capture the vibe that Grey Matter strives to create. They wanted to give you an experience, not just a song. With that theory in mind, they came up with the concept of the "micro-album". A micro-album is a 10 to 15 minute project that will replace the standard "single" that has become the norm. The "Breathe" micro-album consists of 2 full tracks with various interludes and instrumentals in between to maintain the moody feel that Grey Matter has become known for. These tracks are taken from Grey Matters new self titled full length album coming in April on Domination Recordings!
